I had to add a persistent route to the machines on LAN1 that need access to LAN2 as well as the LAN1 DNS servers. This will allow me to ping from LAN1 to LAN2, but not actually pass any data such as RDP, FTP, etc. On the ASA I added a static route to the LAN2 net using the LAN1 IP of the Ubuntu box as the gateway IP. This will not pass two way traffic between the networks. The LAN1 side of the Ubuntu box has the ASA 5505 IP set for its gateway and the LAN1 DNS servers. On the LAN2 side of things, the LAN2 IP of the Ubuntu box is configured as the gateway and two DNS servers on LAN1 side of things are configured for DNS.

I have both interfaces setup and can ping each net from the Ubuntu box.

It's free and will do routing just fine for our purposes. Without purchasing hardware or licenses to let the VLANs talk to each other, this is what I have setup and currently working:ĭropped Windows server in place of Ubuntu with IP forwarding. This is not a necessity, merely a convenience. We're on a ridiculously low budget, so new hardware would be a tough call. Is the ASA 5505 blocking access or do I need to configure something within it to grant access? From a computer on the LAN1 side (53.x) I can ping LAN2 (28.x), but I cannot access any services, etc. I have 2008 installed, installed the RRAS service using the LAN Routing option, network adapters configured for each network (no gateway on 28.x network, ASA 5505 IP for gateway on 53.x network) but am unable to pass traffic. I want to setup Server 2008 on this box as a router so traffic can move between the networks as needed. By using this machine we can access devices at the LAN2 location remotely.

Right now, there is a PC with two NICS configured or each network sitting at the LAN1 location and has both LAN1 and LAN2 signals coming to it. LAN2 is a second location via fiber link that has it's network operating on 192.168.28.x. 192.168.53.1 is a Cisco ASA 5505 connected to an Internet provider. LAN1 is the main operations network on a 192.168.53.x net. I have two LAN segments and one Internet link.
